The New Jewish Chamber Philharmonic Dresden (NJK) was founded in 2007. Audiences and journalists have celebrated this ensemble, whose declared mission is to present the forgotten works of persecuted Jewish composers – music which has not been played in German concert halls for 3 generations, or which – having been composed in exile after the musicians fled from Nazi tyranny – has never been heard in Germany. Now in its 18th season, the orchestra has given over 160 concerts, in which this neglected repertoire is rediscovered and revealed in its full splendor.  The NJK’s principal venue is the Dresden New Synagogue (currently closed for construction, reopening in 2025).

The NJK has toured in Berlin, Cologne, Strasbourg, Wroclav, Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv (and many more) to give new life to the lost legacy of these once prominent composers, whose music was forbidden by the Nazis. The ensemble has appeared at a number of festivals, most prominently including four invitations to Dresden’s international Musikfestspiele (in 2012, 2016, 2019 and 2022) – where the festival program included such orchestras as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Symphony, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the Santa Cecilia Academy, the Czech Philharmonic, and the Israel Philharmonic.

Part of the orchestra’s vision is an ongoing series of Young People’s Concerts, which have been presented regularly since 2016 and strive to bring this special repertoire to schools throughout Saxony. Some 50 such concerts have been given across the state.
